The Assurance of Salvation
The Assurance of Salvation
Can we know that we are saved ?
What does scripture say about this question?
My favorite verse pertaining to the assurance of salvation is found in 1 John 5:13, which states:
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Another favorite verse pertaining to the assurance of salvation is found in the Gospel of John 6:39-40
39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
In the same Gospel of John Jesus tells us in John 10:28-29
28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
This includes the believer themselves. After we are saved, if it were possible we could fall away from faith for a short time and remain secure. Our peace and assurance would be tainted but our salvation remains secure. Our fellowship with God would be damaged.
The apostle Paul in his letters also makes it clear that once Christ saves us we all have eternal salvation. In Paul’s letter to the Romans in Romans 8:38-39 Paul gives us perfect assurance that we forever belong to Jesus Christ.
38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Notice Paul says nothing present or future can seperate us from the love of God.
Is there anything this doesn’t include
It’s like the writer of Hebrews says in Heb 10:14
14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
